Follow the Money Drei

The New Zealand Institute has launched it's new website which can be found here. It says:
the New Zealand Initiative, an independent public policy think tank supported by chief executives of major New Zealand businesses.
We will see how independent it really is.
Hi, My name is ***** and I am doing some research into New Zealand think tanks and transparency. I was wondering if you could provide a list of your members/donors/funders and the amounts they have contributed. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks, *****
I await their reply with interest.

  1. Any thoughts on this article in Stuff about Sky City: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/6683748/Key-defends-casino-deal

Another delightful social and financial trade. Short term gain, long term pain?

  2. I felt that the Dom Post editorial (http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/comment/editorials/6695421/Editorial-Pokies-no-way-to-pay-for-new-centre) captured my feelings rather well. Particularly this passage:

"If a sound business case exists for the construction of a convention centre in Auckland, its promoters should have no difficulty attracting private investors. If a compelling case exists for subsidising its construction with public funds, they should be able to persuade Auckland Mayor Len Brown to dip into ratepayers' pockets."
